Qld MP Douglas savages Newman in TV attack

THE Gold Coast MP who quit the Liberal National Party this week has savaged Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, predicting the downfall of his leadership team.

Alex Douglas, the member for Gaven, has also forecast the rise of a new conservative party in Queensland.

Dr Douglas was among three MPs who quit the party this week.

"I think this current leadership team will be expunged and will go," he told the ABC's 7.30 Queensland program on Friday.

"Ultimately there will be some sort of structural realignment and we will resume normality of democracy here in Queensland," he said.

"The premier does not believe in teamwork.

"The premier talks about teamwork; he does not practise it."

Dr Douglas said Mr Newman thinks loyalty has to be written down and pledged, and people have to be "terrified into it".

"You earn loyalty, you earn respect and you set good examples," he said.

He said he might join a new party which mining magnate Clive Palmer, another newly divorced LNP member, is considering establishing.

But Dr Douglas said he would also consider creating a party of his own, based on LNP values.

Acting Premier Jeff Seeney dismissed Dr Douglas's attack as "absurd".

Mr Newman flew out of Brisbane on Friday with a business delegation on a trade mission to India.
